James Webb Space Telescope captures stunningly clear images of Neptune and its rings – New images released on Wednesday of NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope are providing a glimpse of Neptune and the planet’s rings that are hard to discern in a new light.

“It is been more than three years since the last time we observed these dusty, faint rings it’s the first time that we’ve observed them in the near-infrared light,” said Heidi Hammel who is an Neptune expert and an interdisciplinary scientist working on the Webb project in a press release.

Astronomers speculate that Triton could have been a stray object from the Kuiper Belt — a region of icy objects that lies at the outer edge of our solar systemthat was able to fall into the grasp of Neptune’s gravitational pull. Researchers are planning to utilize Webb to study further Triton as well as Neptune over the coming years.

It is located 30 times further in the solar system in comparison to Earth, Neptune moves through its solar orbit within the dark, remote region of the solar system’s outer regions. At this location, Neptune’s sun appears so tiny and faint that the noon time on Neptune is like the twilight of Earth according to the release stated.

Webb is a greater than the10-year mission that is run by NASA and The European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency.
